Viljo Ratia founded Printex, a fabric printing company, in Helsinki in 1949.

His wife, Armi Ratia, gathered famous young artists and commissioned them to design bold and new patterns unlike anything seen before.

The following year, they held a fashion show using fabrics designed by the artists, which was a great success. One year after the show, in 1951, Marimekko was born.
