Banko ware (Mie Prefecture)
Shidei teapots are lightweight and compact. They are small overall and have short handles, and are popular for their unique style, created by generations of teapot artisans. The local red clay is rich in iron, which absorbs the bitterness of green tea and brings out its umami. Shidei teapots develop a richer luster and a richer flavor with use.
Banko ware originated in the 1700s near Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.
Teapot production became popular in the 1800s, and in 1979, "Yokkaichi Banko ware" was designated a traditional craft of Japan.
