About the Actual Aircraft
The F-15J Eagle, the JASDF's flagship aircraft, is based on the U.S. Air Force's F-15C, which began combat deployment in 1974, and is equipped with the JASDF's proprietary tactical electronic warfare system, J/TEWS, and a similarly proprietary data link system.
Deployed to units in 1982, it continues to play a key role in Japan's air defense.
Eagle pilots, known as Eagleriders, boast exceptional piloting skills. To further hone their skills, elite JASDF fighter pilots are regularly selected to compete in combat-style competitions, or "competitions," in a realistic combat environment.
These competitions are known for the variety of aircraft markings they display, delighting countless fans. The 2002 air combat competition was held at Komatsu Air Base in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The aircraft of the 303rd and 306th Squadrons, based at the base, were decorated with unique markings based on the insignia of each unit (dragon and golden eagle).
