"The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin (French: Le Penseur)

This bronze statue depicts a man lost in thought. It is a masterpiece by François-Auguste-René Rodin, a leading 19th-century French sculptor known as the "father of modern sculpture." Originally named "Le Poète" (The Poet), the name "The Thinker" is said to have been given to the work by Rudier, who cast it after Rodin's death. Rodin created the gates of the Museum of Decorative Arts, inspired by Dante's "Divine Comedy," and named them "The Gates of Hell." The "Thinker" is a part of the gate that sits atop the work. Some say it represents Dante contemplating the Gates of Hell, while others believe it represents Rodin himself.
