Shinogi is a technique in which the surface of each piece of pottery is carved by hand with a spatula or other tool to create a ridge pattern.

Kasama ware, dating back approximately 250 years to the An'ei period of the Edo period, has continued to thrive today, using the same molding, glazing, and firing techniques. Each piece is handcrafted with a shinogi (ridged) pattern, created by scraping the surface with a spatula or other tool. The ridges, created by scraping away the surface, create a three-dimensional appearance. The use of a matte glaze preserves the mug's elegance while avoiding a rough, textured appearance, resulting in a stylish, yet inorganic appearance. Mukaiyama Kiln (Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture) Kasama ware was established during the An'ei period of the Edo period (1772), and the then feudal lord Makino Sadanao worked hard to promote it. Kasama ware has continued to develop, preserving the molding, glazing, and firing techniques of the time. Mukaiyama Kiln is able to do what is possible because it is "handmade," because it has "technology," and because it has "organization." At any given time, over 10 potters and 5 traditional craftsmen are working in the company's workshop, demonstrating their individual personalities while creating pottery.
