This is the 1989 theatrical release, continuing the series that began as an original video release. In the near future, general-purpose humanoid machines called Labors have become commonplace, but crimes using Labors have also become commonplace, leading the police to introduce Labors to prevent this. The basic premise of this series is to depict the exploits of the Patlabor platoon.
While the incident begins with a computer virus causing Labors to go out of control, it eventually delves into the city of "Tokyo" itself, going far beyond the scope of a simple robot story. While it's part of a series, it's more like a Mamoru Oshii film than just another installment, allowing viewers to fully appreciate the unique direction of the film. (Gen Tanaka)
